🌿 Monstera obliqua ‘Expilata’ – Care Tips
A rare and delicate gem among Monstera species
Monstera obliqua ‘Expilata’ is a highly sought-after, rare variety of Monstera known for its exquisitely thin, lace-like leaves with dramatic perforations. Unlike Monstera adansonii, which it’s often confused with, obliqua has much larger leaf holes and far thinner leaf tissue, giving it an almost skeletal appearance.
☀️ Light
-
Prefers bright, indirect light
-
Needs more light than most Monsteras but no direct sun (leaves scorch easily)
-
Consider grow lights if indoors with low natural light
💧 Watering
-
Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy
-
Water when the top layer just begins to dry out
-
Use filtered or rainwater for best results
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
-
Thrives in 24–29°C (75–85°F)
-
Requires very high humidity (80%+) – use a humidifier or terrarium setup
-
Sensitive to cold and dry air – avoid drafts
🌱 Soil & Pot
-
Use a chunky, airy aroid mix (e.g., coco chips, perlite, sphagnum, orchid bark)
-
Must have excellent drainage
-
Benefits from a moss pole or stake for climbing
🌿 Fertilizer
-
Feed every 2–4 weeks in the growing season with a diluted, balanced fertilizer
-
Do not over-fertilize – sensitive roots
✂️ Pruning & Propagation
-
Prune rarely – only to remove yellow or damaged leaves
-
Propagate via stem cuttings with a node, ideally in high humidity and sphagnum moss
🐾 Pet Safety
-
Toxic to pets (like all Monsteras)
Due to its rarity and beauty, Monstera obliqua ‘Expilata’ is more than a houseplant—it’s a living masterpiece. Handle with care, and it will reward you with unmatched botanical elegance.
