🌿 Cyathea – Care Tips

Cyathea, commonly known as tree ferns, are elegant, slow-growing ferns with tall, woody trunks and large, finely divided fronds that unfurl gracefully. Native to tropical and subtropical rainforests, Cyatheas thrive in moist, shaded environments with high humidity—perfect for forest gardens or shaded patios.

☀️ Light

  • Prefers partial to full shade

  • Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn delicate fronds

  • Can tolerate dappled morning light in cooler climates

💧 Watering

  • Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged

  • Water the crown (center of the trunk) during dry weather

  • Do not let soil dry out, especially in hot weather

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Ideal temp: 16–26°C (60–78°F)

  • Requires high humidity – mist fronds regularly or place near water features

  • Protect from frost and cold winds

🌱 Soil & Fertilizer

  • Use rich, well-draining soil with organic matter (like leaf mold or compost)

  • Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring/summer with a diluted balanced fertilizer

  • Avoid chemical-heavy feeds – they may damage roots

✂️ Care Tips

  • Remove old or damaged fronds close to the trunk

  • Keep the trunk moist to mimic natural rainforest conditions

  • Mulch around base to retain moisture and regulate soil temp

🌿 Propagation

  • Can be propagated by spores, though it’s slow and tricky

  • Commercially grown from tissue culture or small plants

🐾 Pet Safety

  • Generally non-toxic, but always keep large fronds out of reach of curious pets
