🌸 Erica (Heather / Heath) – Care Tips

Erica, commonly known as Heather or Heath, is a genus of evergreen shrubs admired for their fine needle-like foliage and small, bell-shaped flowers in shades of pink, white, purple, or red. These low-growing plants are beloved for rock gardens, container displays, and ground cover, especially in cooler climates.

☀️ Light

  • Prefers full sun to partial shade.

  • At least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily for best flowering.

  • Too much shade can lead to leggy growth and fewer blooms.

💧 Watering

  • Keep soil consistently moist—especially during hot weather.

  • Do not let the soil dry out completely.

  • Water deeply, allowing excess to drain—avoid soggy roots.

🌱 Soil

  • Requires well-draining, acidic soil (pH 4.5–6.0).

  • Ideal soil mix: peat moss + pine bark + sand or perlite.

  • Avoid chalky or alkaline soils—they can cause yellowing and poor growth.

💦 Humidity

  • Tolerates normal humidity levels.

  • Prefers good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.

🌡️ Temperature

  • Hardy species tolerate cool to cold climates, often USDA zones 5–8.

  • Some varieties bloom in late winter or early spring, even in snow.

  • Protect from harsh frost in less-hardy types.

🍃 Fertilizer

  • Feed lightly in early spring with a slow-release fertilizer for acid-loving plants (like those used for azaleas or rhododendrons).

  • Avoid overfertilizing—these plants prefer lean conditions.

✂️ Pruning & Maintenance

  • Lightly trim after flowering to keep plants compact and bushy.

  • Do not cut into old wood—only prune the green, leafy part.

🌿 Bonus Tips

  • Great for rock gardens, borders, and containers.

  • Blooms attract bees and pollinators, adding life to your garden.

  • Combine with other acid-lovers like camellias, azaleas, or rhododendrons for a stunning display.
