🌿 Zamia (Zamia Furfuracea / Cardboard Palm) – Care Tips

Zamia is a genus of ancient, slow-growing cycads, with Zamia furfuracea (commonly called the Cardboard Palm) being the most popular for indoor and tropical landscaping use. Despite its palm-like appearance, it is not a true palm, but rather a hardy, low-maintenance plant with stiff, leathery leaves that resemble cardboard—hence the name.

☀️ Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light

  • Can handle some direct morning sun

  • Outdoors: place in partial sun; avoid harsh, direct afternoon sunlight

💧 Watering

  • Allow the soil to dry out between waterings

  • Water thoroughly when top 5 cm (2 inches) is dry

  • Highly drought-tolerant once established

  • Avoid overwatering — prone to root rot

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Thrives in warm temperatures (18–30°C / 65–86°F)

  • Tolerates dry indoor air

  • Avoid temperatures below 10°C (50°F)

🌱 Soil & Potting

  • Use well-draining soil (e.g., cactus or palm mix)

  • Ensure pot has excellent drainage

  • Repot every 2–3 years or when rootbound

🍃 Fertilizer

  • Feed 2–3 times during the growing season (spring–summer)

  • Use a slow-release or diluted balanced fertilizer

  • Avoid over-fertilizing; too much can damage roots

✂️ Maintenance & Propagation

  • Very low maintenance — just remove yellowing or damaged leaves

  • Propagation is by seeds, which is very slow and difficult

  • Often purchased as young nursery plants

⚠️ Toxicity

  • Toxic to pets and humans if ingested ⚠️

Keep out of reach of dogs, cats, and children
