🌺 Adenium obesum (Desert Rose) – Care Guide

Adenium obesum, or Desert Rose, is a stunning succulent shrub with a swollen, sculptural caudex, glossy green leaves, and vibrant, trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom in pink, red, white, or multi-colored shades. Native to arid regions of Africa and the Middle East, it’s popular as a bonsai-style plant and for sun-loving container gardens.

☀️ Light

  • Needs full sun (6–8 hours/day) to thrive and flower well.

  • Indoors: place near a south- or west-facing window.

  • Too little light = leggy stems and poor flowering.

💧 Watering

  • Water deeply but infrequently. Let soil dry out completely between waterings.

  • Spring–summer: water when dry to the touch.

  • Fall–winter (dormant period): water sparingly.

  • Overwatering is the #1 cause of root rot.

🌱 Soil

  • Must be grown in very well-draining soil.

  • Use a cactus or succulent mix, or combine potting soil with sand/perlite/pumice.

  • Always pot in containers with drainage holes.

💦 Humidity

  • Prefers dry to moderate humidity.

  • No misting needed—this plant loves arid air.

🌡️ Temperature

  • Warmth-loving; ideal temperature: 20–35°C (68–95°F).

  • Do not expose to cold below 10°C (50°F)—move indoors if needed.

  • Keep away from frost and cold drafts.

🍃 Fertilizer

  • Feed every 4–6 weeks during growing season (spring–early fall) with a low-nitrogen fertilizer to boost blooming.

  • Stop feeding in dormant months.

✂️ Pruning & Shaping

  • Prune in early spring to shape the plant and encourage multiple branches.

  • Flowers develop on new growth—regular pruning = more blooms.

  • Use gloves when pruning; sap is toxic and irritating to skin.

🪴 Repotting

  • Repot every 2–3 years, in spring, or when rootbound.

  • Expose the top of the caudex slightly above the soil for that iconic bonsai look.

⚠️ Toxicity Warning:

  • Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.

  • Sap may irritate skin and eyes—handle with care.

🌟 Bonus Tip:

To encourage blooming, give Adenium a warm, bright location and a short dry spell before the growing season begins.

Bring home the exotic beauty and structural charm of Adenium obesum—a true statement piece for any indoor or outdoor space.
